Fifteen years ago, Florentino Ramos Ccoillar left his family’s potato farm in the Andes of Peru, seeking a fresh start. He discovered a piece of land in the highland jungle and named it La Nueva Florida—“New Flowering.” Starting with just a few coffee plants, Florentino’s vision soon attracted family members, including his brother Amadeo and his partner Elisa, who joined to build a new future together. Today, La Nueva Florida is a small, thriving community of coffee producers finding themself fortunate in a climate that is optimal for healthy coffee production. Over the past eight harvests, Our trader Cultivar Coffee worked closely with the families to refine their practices, focusing on selective picking, fermentation, and drying techniques. Challenges like coffee leaf rust and limited drying capacity have tested their resilience, but together they found solutions, including co-funding drying modules to improve processing quality. With a shared commitment to sustainable practices and innovation, the families of La Nueva Florida are consistently producing exceptional coffee while preserving their community’s heritage and environment.
In 2024, Amadeo and Albina visited our roastery to gain insights into our process. We cupped our entire lineup, and they were mesmerized to taste non-South American coffees for the first time ever—a privilege we European coffee fanatics often take for granted. So, here’s a gentle reminder to appreciate the diversity of coffee origins available to us and how special this truly is.
