We have a soft spot for Ethiopian Naturals. And Halo is exactly why. Coming from the highlands of Gedeb, this coffee has everything we look for in a great Natural from Ethiopia: loads of fruit, beautiful florals and an expressive sweetness. Around 700 smallholder farmers deliver their ripe cherries to the Halo washing station, where the coffee is carefully processed as a Natural.

In the cup, expect a vibrant combination of raspberry and strawberry, lifted by delicate violet florals. Fruity, floral and wonderfully expressive.

Zusammenarbeit

Halo washing station is located in the village of Halo Barite in Gedeb, Gedeo Zone – an area many coffee drinkers will know as Yirgacheffe.

The station sits at an impressive 2,000–2,100 metres above sea level and works with around 700 smallholder farmers from the surrounding area. Their farms are typically small, semi-forested plots where coffee grows amongst dense vegetation and plenty of shade trees, including false banana.

Ripe cherries from these farms are delivered to Halo and processed using the Natural method, drying the coffee inside the fruit. Combined with the high altitude and Ethiopia’s local heirloom varieties, this creates the kind of intensely fruity and floral coffee we keep coming back to.

Our sourcing partner Nordic Approach classifies Halo as part of its Diima profile – meaning “red” in Oromiffa – reserved for coffees with intense fruit and florals. We couldn’t think of a better fit.
