Master the essentials of specialty coffee. In this hands-on course you’ll learn to operate an espresso machine, dial in the grinder, achieve perfect extraction, and steam silky microfoam. Note: The SCA exam and certificate are optional and not included in the price.

Content

No prior knowledge required! We provide a professional handout, a delicious lunch, and the finest coffees to work with.

In Barista Essentials, you’ll explore the entire coffee chain – from cherry to cup. We cover coffee origins, equipment, and how freshness, brew ratios, and extraction impact flavour. You’ll also learn to organise your workspace for maximum efficiency.

During the practical session, you will dial in grinders, brew various espresso recipes, and master the art of steaming silky microfoam. We’ll even teach you your first latte art heart! Throughout the day, we focus on quality, hospitality, and hygienic working practices.

Location

Keen’s barista trainings take place at our Utrecht roastery (Tractieweg 93). We are easily accessible by car with free parking, or just a 10-minute walk from Utrecht Zuilen station.

Exam

Looking for an SCA Foundation certificate? You can follow the official course at Keen. This one-day training concludes with an online theory exam (2 attempts). The certificate is optional for €150.00 (incl. VAT). Once passed, you’ll receive your official certificate directly from the SCA.
