Hernan Prieto

Tropical. Funky. Syrupy.

Hernan Prieto is named after one of the farmer brothers who cultivated this unique-tasting lot in Ciudad Bolivar, Colombia. This bean rocks the mouthfeel by sticking to your tongue like mango juice and coincidentally also tastes like mango, papaya and melon. It finishes off with a chocolatey toffee aftertaste.

Flavour profile

A cup of Hernan Prieto will whisk your taste buds away to the rain forests of Latin America. It’s filled to the brim with sweet tropical flavour notes, such as mango, papaya and melon. A blueberry-like acidity makes sure that you don’t OD on all that sweetness and creates a delightfully tasty harmony. The aftertaste of this Colombian cup is a lovely mixture of toffee and chocolate, perfect for after any meal.

Hernan Prieto’s best feature, however, is its mouthfeel. It has a way of sticking to your palate and coating your tongue in a way that’s reminiscent of mango juice. Or – for our fellow Dutchies – of our favourite childhood beverage, Taksi.

The story – the farm

Hernan and Eugenio Prieto Soto are brothers and owners of Villa Clabelina in Los Monos, Ciudad Bolivar, Colombia. Villa Clabelina is a member of the Coffee Growers Association (CGA) of Juan Saldarriaga, who also runs the brothers’ farm. The CGA is a group of farmers working together to improve their production protocols and methods, and who share knowledge on production and processing. The group was founded by Juan, who has been conducting experimental processing at his family’s farms to produce improved and differentiated products. He has been sharing his new skills with the group members, so that everyone can profit from his research.

After cupping, our partner, Nordic Approach, decided to keep this lot separate and name it after brother Hernan, because of its unique flavour. The rest, as they say, is history.
