On the slopes of Mount Kenya, the smallholder farmers behind Rung’eto grow their coffee at 1,600–1,800 metres above sea level. Their cherries travel to Karimikui washing station, established in 1966 and part of the Rung’eto Farmers Cooperative Society. Nordic Approach, the importer offering this lot, has sourced coffee from the cooperative since 2016.
Care continues long after picking. Cherries are sorted before the fruit is removed, then the beans ferment overnight. After washing and grading, they dry on raised tables for eight to fourteen days. The cooperative has also introduced tiled washing channels and fermentation tanks, alongside water recycling during processing.
That attention to detail gives us plenty to explore. In this cup, we find honey sweetness, the comforting richness of fudge and a bright touch of apricot. It’s the kind of coffee that makes us curious about every step between the farm and our morning brew. Take your time with it: there’s a lovely balance of sweetness and fruit to discover.
