Collaboration

Mahembe is back for redemption. Five years of happy collaboration and counting. After receiving an unexpected visit from Willy (part of the Mahembe crew) last summer in Utrecht, we did a little proud cheer of joy when a new pallet of their coffees found its way to our roastery—the kind of collaboration that makes us love this industry so much!

After stepping into his father’s footsteps and taking over the farm, Justin has been highly committed to nurturing the relationships he has with the smallholders who deliver their cherries to the Mahembe washing station. Not only does he ensure that the smallholders are fairly and competitively compensated for their hard work, but he also invests in the community he is so proud to be part of—among other things, by building a wet mill on his father’s plantation.

Another reason these lots keep improving each year is the strict routine Mahembe follows for coffee reception and sorting. In addition to farmers being expected to sort their own cherries before delivering them to Mahembe, Justin’s team conducts further sorting at the washing station. They place the cherries in a tank and eliminate floaters, which are then processed separately to ensure top quality.
